Mayo’s Heritage Episode 9 – Legacies

After an enforced sojourn for many months due to technical problems Mayo’s Heritage returns for the ninth episode. In this episode of our Irish podcast we highlight Legacies – and in particular the legacy left by people on certain towns and areas of County Mayo. As part of this collection Writer John Corless takes us to Knock Airport, Professor Des McHale takes us to Cong and Writer Terry McDonagh brings us to Kiltimagh.

Mayo’s Heritage: Week 8

On this week’s Mayo’s Heritage we look at Country Living, Irish Livelihoods and Traditions – We start on Achill Island and learn about some of the past livelihoods, from shark fishing to amethyst mining! Then we take part of a tour of The National Museum of Country Life in Castlebar and learn about some of the traditions and attire of country life in Ireland. Your tourguides for this week’s show are Sculptor and the Director of the Customs House Art Studio in Westport John McHugh and Dr Anne O Dowd from the National Museum of Country Life.

Bridie Quinn pictured in Erris at Danny's StoneOn this weeks Mayo’s Heritage we focus on 3 well known Irish writers and the areas they were associated with.  We look at John Millington Synge and Erris with Bridie Quinn (pictured) , we visit Killedan with Terry McDonagh and talk about the poet Antoine Ó Raifteiri, among other writers associated with this part of Kiltimagh and stop in Aghamore with The Chairman of the Kenny/Naughton Autumn School Paul Rogers to talk about the writer PD Kenny.

Mayo’s Heritage Week 6: Island Life: This week we choose three very special Irish islands off the Mayo Coast as our Theme for Mayo’s Heritage – We Visit Clare Island with Poet Ger Reidy, Achill Island with John McHugh Director of the Customs House Studios and we return to Ger Reidy for our final excerpt from A Heritage Tour of Inishturk.

Mayo’s Heritage Week 5: Irish Churches – This week we look at the theme of churches and we visited many Abbey’s, Cathedrals and Churches on the Heritage Tour, but this week we look at Belmullet’s Sacred Heart Church with Poet Edith Geraghty, Mullranney Church with Local Historian Jackie Rumley, Tourmakeady Church with Historian Micheal John Casey and finally St Mary’s Church in Cong with Professor Des McHale.

Mayo’s Heritage Week 4: Saints: On this weeks show we look at the theme of Irish Saints, we start with Saint Movee and visit Kilmovee with the late Historian Seosamh McGowan, then we move to West Sligo to Saint Farnan’s Shrine with our tourguide Author Jack Harte and finally we look at Saint Patrick with a tour of Aughagower in County Mayo with Poet Ger Reidy.
