September is almost over as Sinéad takes a short walk to the hedgerow to see if the time is right for sloe berry picking. Last month is was all berries, this month it’s just the sloe variety, as the Irish autumn is waning and there is a definite chill in the air, though we look forward to enjoying what natures larder might bring us if we are patient.

l love all the calendar road walks and I especially like the ones about the berries. todays was the sloe berry. I remember eating them in my youth. the test was who could chew them without making a face. There was a song my brother used to sing it was called “The Thorn Tree”, and went as follows. “all aroung the thorn tree the little people play and men and women passing would turn there heads away, but if your hearts a childs heart and if your eyes are keen you’ll never fear the thorn tree that grows beyond Cloheen (check spelling.) There are definitely a lot of myths attached to the thorn tree and in the song it continues to say”why should they be afraid ?, when from a branch of thorn tree the blessed crown was made.”
